Life in a informal settlement
Informal settlement
When I wake up I am always cold and or sick and then mum must take me to the hospital, costing a lot of money. Once At school, with bad girl and boys rooms, I might fall into the toilet. We share textbooks and often there may not be a chair for me. I often hope that I get a chair but at times due to bullying I lose out. There are also mean massive gang fights at or near our school which also makes me not want to go.
Other Daily challenges are not being able to go to school because My mom cannot afford to buy new school uniform. If I have a uniform I go to school for 7 to 8 hours with an empty stomach most days. For me in informal settlements, having an extra meal during the day is a privilege which normally comes on my birthday. Otherwise it is sometimes pap in the mornings and then pap with something else at night.
A problem of shacks is the building materials used and the standard conditions of the shacks. A lot of fires occur and many shacks burn. We lose everything in shack fires. Last time I lost clothes and my own little treasures, like my one armed spiderman. Our rebuilt shack is on unused land. The fact that the land is not legally ours, we who live there live in fear of eviction.
There are many things I cannot change such as having better toilets at home and school, a warm bed and three meals a day. However what I can change is to help my mom by doing some of the homework while she is working. I would also pray and speak to the newspapers to help our school to get better toilets.
